By now you’ve probably whizzed around your nearest city in the confines of an Uber car or, at the very least, have heard of the service that has taken the taxi world by storm. On-demand, convenient, user-friendly; what more could you ask from a transportation service?
As we approach the holidays and prepare for the parties and events, and consider traveling responsibly, the need for transportation is sure to crop up at least once. Should you reach for the Uber app? Maybe. But it’s worth it to consider a few things before you do it.
Here are a few situations where you might want to call a company like ours before booking with Uber:
You might need advance booking. Uber is an “on-demand” service. This is enticing, as we are creatures of convenience. The problem? You can’t book an Uber ride ahead of time. And while you may be able to wing it as you bar hop with your friends around a city, a solid pick-up could be necessary for business-related or formal events. Professional transportation services such as Access CLT allow you to book days – even months – in advance, so there are no guessing games when you need to get from A to B.
You know in advance what your rates will be. With Uber, peak hours might lead to “surge pricing” since the demand is higher during those time frames. The “surge” can be anywhere from 25 – 200 (!) percent. If you don’t prepare ahead of time for a car service, and are now at the mercy of Uber, you might pay a lot of money – and you might not have time to book an alternative. Like the Business Manager whose Uber ride cost her almost as much as a plane ticket. (Yikes.) When you book with a company like us in advance, there won’t be any surprises – and you’ll never have to worry about “surge pricing”.
Credentials. Drivers for companies like Access Transportation go through vigorous background checks and must adhere to strict guidelines, including a PVH (passenger vehicle for hire) check. Among the qualifications for this are two full, eight-hour long days of training, and a strict adherence to state and county regulations including vehicle checks and the requirement that all drivers wear a suit and tie. We provide a $1.5 million insurance plan for each of our cars. Our drivers also have requirements they must meet for the hotels and companies we service, too.
To become an Uber driver, you currently need a valid license and must pass a background check put in place by the company, not the city or state. The only insurance in place is the personal car insurance of the Uber driver. Beyond that you rely on a driver’s customer reviews. And Uber notoriously will not take responsibility or hold drivers accountable for events that occur in Uber cars.
Which leads me to…
Peace of mind. There’s no reason to think that you wouldn’t be safe in an Uber cab, and many people have never thought twice about riding in one alone, however there are plenty of those who aren’t comfortable using the service at night without a buddy. If this sounds like you, it pays to think ahead and book a traditional car service so you’re not stuck in a situation that is unsettling for you.
Class. Uber has levels of “higher end” cars you can request, although you’ll be paying more for that. With a traditional car service, those high end luxuries are staples. At the base level of service with traditional car service companies, you are still getting a driver in a professional car sporting a suit and tie who is ready to assist you with loading your bags.
You don’t know who will pull up. You can’t request drivers with Uber, which means you’ll always have someone new to chat with on your way to your destination. This has its downsides, too, such as possibly having to sit on top of crushed Cheetos in your holiday best. With a traditional car service you can reserve a specific driver, know you’ll be greeted by someone in a suit and tie, and enjoy a ride in a clean car. We pride ourselves on the relationships we build with our customers!
If you truly want to relax and feel taken care of, be guaranteed top-notch service at a reasonable price, or have specific arrival or pickup times, it pays to plan ahead. Let us help you stay safe, arrive on time, and take the stress out of this holiday season.
